Why are off licences called off licences?

Why are off licences called off licences!?
Answers:
unlike pubs and other establishments that can be licensed to sell alcohol for consumption on and off the premises

an off license have a icense to sell alcohol that is for consumption off the premises only (except in small amounts if it is for promotional purposes eg!. tasting of a new drink by staff and customers to be sold)

off licenses used to only sell alcohol, tabacconists used to sell cigarettes and other tabacco products, green grocers sold fruit and vegetables, paper shops sold newpapers, magazines etc!.!.!. if you wanted a non alcoholic drink you went to a temperance bar there were no cans or bottles of pop you had to have by the glass but this is going back a long time ago before glass bottling was made affordable (pre 1910's)but now most places are doing it all in one

hope this helps

Because they are licenced to sell Alcohol and Tobacco off the premises!. You're not aloud to Drink or smoke in an offie, but you are off!.
